Colonel Kira Nerys - Bajoran Female
Commanding officer, Deep Space Nine, Bajoran Sector

Kira Nerys was born in Dahkur Province on Bajor in 2343 during the Cardassian Occupation. Her parents were Kira Taban (father) and Kira Meru (mother). Nerys has two brothers - Reon and Paul. Nerys began fighting the Cardassians when she was 12 years old. At the age of 13, Nerys joined the resistance, specifically the Shakaar Resistance Cell, led by future Bajoran First Minister Shakaar Edon. She continued with the Resistance until the Cardassians finally left Bajor in 2369.

After the Cardassians withdrew and the occupation ended, Nerys joined the Bajoran militia. The Cardassian ore processing space station, Terok Nor, was abandoned to become the property of Bajor. Wanting aid after the devastating occupation, Bajor invited the Federation and Starfleet to help during the transitional period. Terok Nor became Deep Space Nine and was operated by Starfleet for Bajor. Nerys was assigned to Deep Space Nine with the rank of Major to be the Bajoran liaison officer to Starfleet and the Federation.

Nerys has accomplished much during her career aboard DS9. Most recently, Captain Sisko sent Nerys to Cardassia with Odo and Garak to teach resistance and guerrilla techniques to former Cardassian head Legate Damar and the Cardassian dissidents. Starfleet awarded Kira a commission with the rank of commander. She aided Damar and the resistance in attacks against the Dominion and the Cardassian collaborators and helped raise Damar to the status of hero in the eyes of the common Cardassians. The Cardassian resistance, led by Damar, Nerys and Garak, played a significant role in the final defeat of the Dominion. Damar gave his life for the cause. In Nerys' and Garak's presence, Odo secured a surrender from the female Changeling leader of the Dominion.

After the death of Captain Sisko at the hands of Dukat and the Pah Wraiths subsequent to the end of the war, Nerys was assigned as Commanding Officer of Deep Space Nine, where she is currently.
