Lt. Nog – Ferengi
male
Chief of Engineering, Deep Space
Nog is the son of Rom, the current Grand Nagus of Ferenginar, and of a Ferengi
woman named Prinadora, who left his father for a wealthier man, managing
to swindle him out of his assets in the process. Growing up on Deep Space
Nine while Rom worked for Quark, Nog was well on the way toward becoming
a petty thief and criminal, until Starfleet took over the station.
Under the influence of Benjamin
Sisko, the friendship of Jake Sisko, and the teaching of Keiko O’Brien, Nog began to see other opportunities.
To his father’s ultimate delight and his uncle’s horror, Nog
decided to join Starfleet, the first Ferengi to do so. Then-Commander Sisko
sponsored him for the Academy, and he was accepted, though it was not easy
for a Ferengi to adapt to life on Earth.
In the Dominion War, he briefly
served as acting chief engineer aboard the starship Valiant. He earned
distinction but lost a leg during the siege of
AR-558; he received a bionic replacement leg, but psychological healing took
longer. He then served aboard the starship Defiant in the final assault on
Cardassia, for which Captain Sisko recommended him for promotion to lieutenant.
With Miles O’Brien leaving the station to return to Earth, Nog was
also promoted to the station’s Chief of Engineering.
His youth and quick promotion,
his assignment as chief of engineering, and his background as a member
of a species with which the Federation remains
on rocky terms, have made acceptance difficult among a number of the Starfleet
and Bajoran crew. Still a little unsure, Nog has to prove he’s earned
his rank and position, to his staff as well as to himself.
